Women’s Basketball Claims 82-45 Win at Medgar Evers
BROOKLYN, N.Y.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team notched an 82-45 victory at Medgar Evers in the opening round of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament Saturday evening.
The Lions improve to 4-1 on the season with the win while the Cougars slide to 0-5 overall.
Jasmine Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif.) led Eastern Nazarene with 16 points on the night. Krystal Holl (Smithsburg, Md.) finished with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Elia Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.) netted 10 points and grabbed seven boards. Jordan Grays (Elk Grove, Calif.) posted eight points, six rebounds and three assists. Celina Calderon (Lompoc, Calif.) chipped in with seven assists, six points and five steals.
The visitors erupted for 28 points in the first quarter while restricted the home team to just eight points through 10 minutes of action.
The Lions poured in 21 points in the second frame while allowing just seven points to boast a 49-15 advantage at the intermission.
Eastern Nazarene shot 48.8% from the floor in the first half and connected on 3-of-8 attempts from long distance. Medgar Evers was limited to 11.1% shooting from the field and zero three-pointers made on eight tries.
The hosts edged the away side 14-13 in third-quarter scoring as the Lions headed into the final period with a 62-29 lead.
Eastern Nazarene chalked up 20 points in the fourth stanza to secure its third-consecutive victory while Medgar Evers mustered 16 points in the final 10 minutes of play.
The Lions finished with a field-goal percentage of 46.7% on the night while draining five treys on 12 attempts. The Cougars shot 25.9% from the floor and 7.1% from beyond the arc.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene advances to the championship game of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament November 29.
