Women’s Basketball Wins at Wentworth, 46-41
BOSTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team topped Wentworth 46-41 on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Lions improve to 8-12 overall and 6-7 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Leopards drop to 5-16 overall and a 3-11 in league play.
Mhiah Vickers (Westlake Village, Calif.) recorded a double-double to lead the visitors with 11 points and 11 rebounds to go with seven assists. Elia Salazar (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished with eight points and 11 boards. Jasmine Mata (Santa Barbara, Calif.) scored seven points in the game while Nicole Greer (Odenton, Md.) and Krystal Holl (Smithsburg, Md.) each added six points.
Eastern Nazarene generated 10 consecutive points to open up an 18-9 lead with 8:39 left to play in the half.
Wentworth responded with nine straight points to level the score at 18-18 with 5:21 remaining.
Each squad sank one layup in the final two minutes of the half as the Lions clung to a 21-20 edge at the break.
Vickers paced Eastern Nazarene with six points in the first half while Greer chipped in with five points.
The Lions shot 29.0% from the field in the opening frame while holding the Leopards to 25.9% shooting from the floor.
The guests grabbed a six-point advantage with 8:27 remaining as Salazar netted a layup to cap off a 6-0 run.
The home team cut the margin to two heading into the final two minute of regulation as Riselly Deoleo made a jumper, 42-40.
After Wentworth pulled to within one with 50 seconds to go, 42-41, Vickers drained a jump shot and Mata converted a pair of free throws to lock up Eastern Nazarene's second-straight win and snap a three-game skid against conference foes.
The Lions finished with a field-goal percentage of 28.1% in the game while being limited to 0-for-8 shooting from three-point range. The Leopards shot 29.4% from the floor and 40% from behind the arc.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene returns home to square off against Salve Regina February 11.
