Women’s Basketball Storms Past Non-Conference Foe Newbury, 73-38
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College women's basketball team cruised to a 73-38 victory over Newbury in non-conference action Thursday evening at the Lahue Physical Education Center.
The Lions improve to 7-12 on the season while the Nighthawks flutter to 6-13 overall with the result.
Katy Teare (Frazier Park, Calif.) notched a double-double with 16 points and 14 boards to pace the home team. Jaysa Cooper (Frisco, Texas) poured in 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Nicole Greer (Odenton, Md.) finished with 11 points while Mhiah Vickers (Westlake Village, Calif.) chipped in with seven points.
Eastern Nazarene came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, tallying the first 14 points of the game.
The Lions stretched their lead to 20 points with 10:26 on the clock as Cooper knocked down the second of two free throw attempts, 22-2.
The hosts widened the gap to 42-7 with 1:17 to go in the half on a layup by Teare.
The visitors cut the deficit to 42-11 before the halftime intermission after scoring the final four points of the opening stanza.
Cooper paced the Lions with nine points through 20 minutes of action while Greer added seven points.
Eastern Nazarene sported a field-goal percentage of 43.9% at the half. Newbury connected on just two field-goal attempts in the opening frame on 33 tries.
The guests maintained their double-figure advantage throughout the duration of the second period en route to the 35-point win.
The Lions shot 42.1% from the floor and 30% from behind the arc. The Nighthawks finished with a field-goal percentage of 21.0% on the night to go with 2-of-11 shooting from the perimeter.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene resumes conference play as it hits the road for a key matchup at Wentworth February 7.
