Softball Splits Doubleheader at Lasell
NEWTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College softball team swapped victories at Lasell in a non-conference twinbill Friday afternoon. The Lions logged an 11-0 five-inning shutout in the series opener before the Lasers rebounded to earn a 3-2 win in game two.
The Lions move to 9-7 on the year with the outcomes while the Lasers progress to 3-9 overall.
Rebecca Ashman (Havre de Grace, Md.) notched a team-best five RBIs, four base hits, and four runs scored on the day. Kiley Ozaki (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) posted three hits, three RBIs, and one run. Lauren Clements (Garrison, Texas) finished with three base knocks and one RBI. Rebecca Hayner (Halfmoon, N.Y.) chipped in with three runs scored, two hits, and two stolen bases.
In game one, Eastern Nazarene racked up 13 hits to slug past Lasell 11-0 in five innings.
The visitors jumped ahead 4-0 in the top of the second inning. Ashman launched her second home run of the season to drive in Hayner, Kori Bow (Shaftsbury, Vt.), and Dominique Santos (Lancaster, Calif.).
The Lions added a run in the third to widen the gap to 3-0 as Ozaki belted her first collegiate homer to lead off the frame.
Eastern Nazarene manufactured five runs in the fourth to extend its advantage to 10-0. Jenessa Huerta (El Monte, Calif.) laced a single to right to plate Bow from third base before Hayner scampered home on a double-steal as Huerta swiped second base. Ashman roped a double down the left field line to knock in Huerta from second. Viviana Coix (Warrenville, Ill.) followed with an RBI double to the gap in left-center to score Ashman. Clements raked a one-out double to drive in Coix.
The guests tacked on a run in the fifth to stretch their lead to 11-0. Hayner tagged up and scored from third as Ashman hoisted a sacrifice fly to right field.
Elisabeth Schaffer (Benton, Pa.) spun her 27th-straight complete game and struck out 11 while allowing just one hit and one walk.
In the nightcap, Eastern Nazarene dropped a narrow 3-2 decision to Lasell.
The Lions captured an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the first inning. Ozaki singled to left field to plate Ashman from third.
Eastern Nazarene chalked up a run in the third to double its advantage to 2-0. Ozaki lifted a sacrifice fly as Ashman crossed the dish for the second time in the contest.
The Lasers tallied three runs in the fourth to seize a 3-2 edge. Sarah Walton, Lisa Pare, and Hailey Haskins each collected an RBI in the inning.
Meghan Stanley (Bedford, Mass.) tossed her second complete game in her third start of the year.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene hosts defending league champion Bay Path March 30 in the first home games of the spring and first conference games.
