CLERMONT, Fla.- The Eastern Nazarene College softball team suffered a 2-1 setback against Rensselaer before falling to Roanoke 13-1 Tuesday evening in Florida.
The Lions drop to 5-3 on the season with the two results. The Engineers improve to 5-2 overall while the Maroons jump to 6-1 on the spring.
Dominique Santos (Lancaster, Calif.) collected a pair of base hits and drove in one RBI. Kiley Ozaki (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) chipped in with two base knocks and one run scored. Jenessa Huerta (El Monte, Calif.) posted two hits while Lauren Clements (Garrison Texas) notched one hit and one RBI.
In the squad's first contest of the day, Eastern Nazarene narrowly fell 2-1 to Rensselaer.
The Lions tallied their only run in the bottom of the fifth as Ozaki scored all the way from first on a double to right field off the bat of Clements.
The Engineers generated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to claim a 2-1 edge. Quin Garant doubled to left field to drive in Maddie Provencher before an RBI single by Jessica Torch plated Ryleigh Greenwald for the go-ahead run.
Elisabeth Schaffer (Benton, Pa.) spun her fourth complete game of the spring and notched three strikeouts in the pitcher's circle.
In the nightcap, Eastern Nazarene endured a 13-1 loss to Roanoke in five innings.
The Maroons manufactured one run in the home half of the first inning to seize a 1-0 lead as Brooke Trapuzzano crossed the dish.
Roanoke tacked on three runs in the second to widen the gap to 4-0. Rebecca Hensley tripled to knock in Kate Priester and Kendall Penn. Trapuzzano followed with a double to score Hensley.
The Lions got on the board in the top of the third to trim the deficit to 4-1. Rebecca Hayner (Halfmoon, N.Y.) scurried home on a groundout by Santos.
The Maroons chalked up six runs in the bottom of the third frame to claim a nine-run advantage, 10-1. Roanoke added three scores in the fourth to extend its lead to 13-1.
Santos pitched 2.1 innings in her third start of the season and Meghan Stanley (Bedford, Mass.) tossed 1.2 innings of relief.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene squares off against Defiance and Penn State-New Kensington March 6.
