Second-Seeded Softball Edged by Western New England, 2-1, in First-Ever CCC Playoff Home Game
QUINCY, Mass.- The No. 2 seed Eastern Nazarene College softball team fell to third-seeded Western New England 2-1 in the program's first home Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament game Saturday afternoon at Mitchell/McCoy Field.
The Lions move to 26-11 on the year with the result while the Golden Bears improve to 22-16 overall.
Dominique Santos (Lancaster, Calif.) notched one base hit and one run on the day. Lauren Clements (Garrison, Texas) finished with one base knock and one RBI.
The visitors snagged a 1-0 edge in the top of the third inning. Mallory Donelan roped a single to left-center to plate Sydney Pounds from third base.
The hosts battled back to level the contest at 1-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth. After Santos led off the frame with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Kayleen Garrick (Sparks, Nev.), Clements laced a two-out double to right-center to drive in her team-leading 38th RBI of the spring.
Western New England reclaimed a one-run lead with a score in the sixth, 2-1. Tori Fisher singled down the right field line to knock in Jenn Luba for the go-ahead run.
Elisabeth Schaffer (Benton, Pa.) tossed a complete game in the pitcher's circle and posted seven strikeouts in her 17th start.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will resume CCC Tournament action May 4 against Salve Regina in an elimination game at Endicott College.
