Softball Sweeps Twinbill Over Wentworth, Walks-Off in Game Two
BOSTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College softball team rallied to claim a pair of vital conference wins over Wentworth Friday afternoon at Carr Diamond, triumphing 5-0 and 3-2.
The Lions climb to 11-5 on the season and 4-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the victories. The Leopards fall to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in league action with the decisions.
Dominique Santos (Lancaster, Calif.) posted a team-high three hits and scored a run while Haley Viscovich (Modesto, Calif.) also landed three hits on the day. Kayleen Garrick (Sparks, Nev.) finished with two hits, two runs scored, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Kori Bow (Shaftsbury, Vt.) and Jenessa Huerta (El Monte, Calif.) both recorded two base knocks, one RBI, and one run. Lauren Weidler (Lansdale, Pa.) chipped in with two hits and an RBI while Tylan Onorato (Wiscassett, Maine) scored twice and stole a base.
Eastern Nazarene stifled Wentworth to earn a 5-0 victory in game one.
The Lions chalked up two runs in the bottom of the first to seize a 2-0 edge. Santos tagged up and crossed the dish on a sacrifice fly by Weidler. Lauren Clements (Garrison, Texas) followed with an RBI base knock to drive in Garrick.
Eastern Nazarene tacked on three runs in the sixth to widen the gap to 5-0. Garrick scored her second run of the game as Emily Gomez (Floral Park, N.Y.) hoisted a sacrifice fly to left. Rebecca Hayner (Halfmoon, N.Y.) motored home on a groundout by Viviana Coix (Warrenville, Ill.) before Bow scorched a single right to plate Onorato.
Elisabeth Schaffer (Benton, Pa.) spun her fifth complete-game of the season and finished with seven strikeouts.
The Lions rallied for a walk-off win in game two to collect their fourth-straight conference victories.
The Leopards produced a pair of runs in the top of the fourth to establish a 2-0 lead. Caroline Shea singled up the middle to knock in Deanna DiPilato before Kayla DeMedeiros crossed the dish on a groundout by Megan Berryman.
Eastern Nazarene trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the fifth. Huerta slapped a single into left to plate Bow from third base.
The Lions scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to earn the come-from-behind win. With the bases full, Garrick roped a double to right to drive in the game-tying and game-winning runs as Huerta and Onorato both scampered home.
Heidi Gomez (Floral Park, N.Y.) pitched 3.1 innings and registered two strikeouts in her sixth start of the year. Weidler tossed 3.2 innings of shutout-relief to pick up her second win of the season.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene travels to Elms for a non-conference doubleheader April 3.
