Softball Outlasts Monmouth in Extras, Blanks Bridgewater State
CLERMONT, Fla.- The Eastern Nazarene College softball team edged Monmouth (Ill.) 3-2 in eight innings and breezed by Bridgewater State 11-0 in five frames Wednesday at the PFX Spring Games.
The Lions improve to 7-3 on the season with the two victories. The Scots fall to 4-4 overall while the Bears slide to 2-6.
Lauren Clements (Garrison, Texas) and Kayleen Garrick (Sparks, Nev.) both collected four hits, three RBIs, and scored twice on the day. Kori Bow (Shaftsbury, Vt.) finished with four base knocks and one run scored. Lauren Weidler (Lansdale, Pa.) posted three hits, two RBIs, and a pair of runs scored. Dominique Santos (Lancaster, Calif.) chipped in with two hits, two runs, and three RBIs while Emily Gomez (Floral Park, N.Y.) added two base knocks and two RBIs.
In the morning contest, Eastern Nazarene earned a 3-2 extra-inning victory over Monmouth (Ill.).
The Lions tallied one run in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead. Garrick laced a single to right field to drive in Rebecca Ashman (Havre de Grace, Md.) from third base.
The Scots responded with the tying run in the home half of the fourth, 1-1. Gianna Drager crossed the dish on a two-out single to left by Laura Dulee.
Eastern Nazarene generated two runs in the top of the eighth to claim a 3-1 edge. With two runners in scoring position, Santos raked a double to left to plate Tylan Onorato (Wiscassett, Maine) and Garrick.
Monmouth cut the deficit to 3-2 with a score in the bottom of the frame. Liz Hippen landed an RBI single to drive in Abby Tucker.
Weidler pitched five innings in her second start of the spring and finished with four strikeouts. Elisabeth Schaffer (Benton, Pa.) threw three innings of relief and posted four strikeouts to collect her third win of the season.
Eastern Nazarene capped off the day with a 11-0 victory over Bridgewater State.
The Lions sprung for three runs in the top of the first inning to establish an early 3-0 lead. Weidler raced home from third base on a wild pitch before Emily Gomez singled to center to drive in Bow and Clements.
Eastern Nazarene manufactured four runs in the second to widen the margin to 7-0. Weidler laced a two-out single to centerfield to plate Jenessa Huerta (El Monte, Calif.) and Santos. Clements followed with her first home run of the year, a two-run blast to left field.
The Lions tacked on four runs in the fifth to stretch their advantage to double-digits, 11-0. Santos roped a double to left to score Ashman. Garrick singled to left to drive in Huerta and Santos. Clements recorded her third RBI of the game with a single to plate Garrick.
In her second pitching appearance of the day, Schaffer hurled a nine-strikeout shutout to notch her third complete game of the spring.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene wraps up play in the Sunshine State March 8 against Wartburg and Wheaton (Ill.).
