Softball Wraps Up Regular Season with Two Losses at Salve Regina
NEWPORT, R.I.- The Eastern Nazarene College softball team dropped the final two games of the regular season, falling at Salve Regina Saturday 8-0 and 10-1.
The Lions finish the regular season with a 15-23 overall record and a 7-11 mark in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Seahawks improve to 15-15 on the year and 12-4 in league competition with the wins.
Lauren Clements (Garrison, Texas) collected two hits and scored a run on the day. Becky Bahr (Brentwood, N.Y.) finished with a pair of base knocks while Emily Gomez (Floral Park, N.Y.) picked up an RBI.
Salve Regina blanked Eastern Nazarene 8-0 in the opening contest as the Lions mustered one hit.
The Seahawks produced three runs in the bottom of the first inning to claim an early 3-0 lead. Emily Woznick roped a two-out double to left to drive in Nikki Bukovsky and Francesca Galeazzi. Lexi Soucie followed with a base hit up the middle to score Woznick.
The home team added a run in the third to stretch its advantage to 4-0. Woznick picked up her third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to right to plate Elizabeth Lombardo from third base.
Salve Regina scored three times in the fourth to widen the gap to 7-0. With the bases full, Lombardo laced a bases-clearing triple to right-center to drive in Lindsey Florent, Bukovsky and Galeazzi.
The Seahawks clinched the 8-0 victory with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI base knock by Genevieve Benoit.
Heidi Gomez (Floral Park, N.Y.) struck out four batters in her 17th start of the season.
In game two, Salve Regina utilized a late surge to earn a 10-1 win in six innings.
The hosts tallied a run in the bottom of the second to seize a 1-0 edge. After Soucie led off with a double, Benoit poked a single into left to drive in the first run of the contest.
Salve Regina doubled its advantage to 2-0 with a run in the third inning. Woznick ripped a base hit into left to plate Lombardo.
Eastern Nazarene posted a run in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit to 2-1. Clements crossed the dish as Emily Gomez rolled a grounder to the shortstop.
The Seahawks regained a two-run cushion with a score in the home half of the frame, 3-1. Benoit scored on a squeeze play as Galeazzi bunted down the first base line.
The home team erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the win. Galeazzi, Bukovsky, Lombardo, Kara O'Riley, Soucie and Megan Guest all collected RBI base hits in the inning.
Lauren Weidler (Lansdale, Pa.) tossed three innings and finished with a pair of strikeouts. Heidi Gomez worked 2.2 innings in her second outing on the afternoon and registered two strikeouts.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene will gear up for the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament, beginning April 30.
