Softball Notches Two Wins Over Wentworth Saturday
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College softball team earned a pair of conference victories Saturday afternoon over Wentworth at Mitchell/McCoy Field. The Lions topped the Leopards 8-3 and 11-3.
Eastern Nazarene improves to 10-12 on the season and 5-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the wins. Wentworth drops to 4-11 overall with the losses and 0-4 in league play.
Heidi Gomez (Floral Park, N.Y.) registered six hits on the day and drove in five RBIs while scoring twice. Emily Gomez (Floral Park, N.Y.) finished with four hits, four runs scored, three RBIs and a stolen base. Lauren Weidler (Lansdale, Pa.) posted four base knocks, five runs scored and a stolen base while Meghan Stanley (Bedford, Mass.) collected four hits, two RBIs and crossed the dish once.
In game one, the home team landed 13 hits en route to an 8-3 victory.
The Lions opened the scoring in the first inning, tallying one run. Kaitlyn Jimenez (Meriden, Conn.) tagged up and scored from third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lauren Clements (Garrison, Texas).
Wentworth leveled the score at 1-1 in the top of the second. Karsyn Sawyer crossed the dish on an RBI single by Rachel Willcutt.
Eastern Nazarene reclaimed the lead with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame. Stanley doubled to plate Emily Gomez before Heidi Gomez scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Jimenez.
The Lions generated four runs in the third inning to widen the gap to 7-1. Emily Gomez raked a double to drive in Weidler and Heidi Gomez followed with a two-run double to score Emily Gomez and Payton Fry (Chandler, Ariz.). Becky Bahr (Brentwood, N.Y.) picked up her third RBI of the spring with a single to plate Kelly Couite (West Bridgewater, Mass.) from second base.
The Leopards answered with two runs in the top of the fourth frame to cut the deficit to 7-3. Libby White drew a bases-loaded walk to knock in Sawyer from third. Willcutt scampered home on a two-out single by Megan Berryman.
The hosts tacked on a run in the fifth to push the margin to 8-3. After Weidler led off the frame with a double, Emily Gomez delivered an RBI single with one away in the inning.
Weidler pitched 3.2 innings and struck out four batters while surrendering just one hit. Heidi Gomez fanned four in 3.1 innings of work.
In game two, Eastern Nazarene manufactured a dozen hits to secure its 10th consecutive win over Wentworth.
The guests grabbed a 1-0 edge in the top of the first. Berryman rounded third and scored as Willcutt scorched a single down the left field line.
The Lions scored three times in the bottom of the inning to seize a 3-1 advantage. Viviana Coix (Warrenville, Ill.) trotted home as Emily Gomez was issued a bases-loaded walk. Fry lifted a sacrifice fly to left to drive in Clements before Heidi Gomez laced a double to the gap in right-center to knock in Emily Gomez and Weidler.
Eastern Nazarene added a run in the second to extend its lead to 4-1. Coix plated Stanley from second with a one-out single up the middle.
The Leopards narrowed the gap to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the fifth. Haley Sabino and Sawyer each crossed the dish in the inning with two outs.
The home side produced four runs in the bottom of the fourth to push its advantage to 8-3. Heidi Gomez collected one RBI and Jimenez contributed with two RBIs in the frame.
The Lions plated three runs in the sixth to cap off the eight-run victory. Fry and Heidi Gomez roped back-to-back RBI singles and Stanley drove in the win-clinching run with a single up the middle.
Weidler hurled a complete game with two strikeouts in six innings of action.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will host defending CCC champion Western New England April 12.
