Men’s Volleyball Falls to Newbury in NECC Quarterfinals, 3-0
QUINCY, Mass.- The fourth-seeded Eastern Nazarene College men's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to fifth-seed Newbury in the New England Collegiate Conference quarterfinals Tuesday evening at the Lahue Physical Education Center.
The Lions finish the season with a 12-10 overall record while the Nighthawks improve to 10-15 on the year with the outcome.
Kenny Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) paced the team with 14 digs and 10 kills on the night. Derek Fowler (Williamstown, N.J.) finished with seven kills and three aces. Matthew Tyree (Lansdale, Pa.) notched 23 assists, 10 digs, three service aces, and a pair of kills. Andrew Shaw (Weymouth, Mass.) added nine digs and four kills.
The home team fell behind 1-0 as the visitors claimed the opening set 25-21.
Newbury doubled its advantage to 2-0 with a 25-20 victory in the second frame.
The Nighthawks clinched the match with a 25-19 decision in the third to advance to the NECC semifinals.
Joshua Thorne led the visitors with 13 kills and 12 dig while Oscar Chavez registered 28 assists and nine digs.
"This match, by no means, is a reflection of our season. We have overcome so many obstacles and come so far in a short period of time," commented head coach Kaylee Hewitt. "I couldn't be more proud of this group. As the first varsity team in school history, they have established a good foundation for the program's future."
