Men’s Volleyball Wins First-Ever Match in Thrilling Fashion Over Newbury, 3-2
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's volleyball team posted a come-from-behind victory in the program's inaugural match, knocking off Newbury 3-2 Thursday evening at the Lahue Physical Education Center.
The Lions improve to 1-0 on the year and 1-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference with the win. The Nighthawks fall to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in league action with the result.
Kenny Sorensen (Quincy, Mass.) paced the home team with 18 kills while adding two digs. Derek Fowler (Williamstown, N.J.) registered 16 kills and four digs on the night. Matthew Tyree (Lansdale, Pa.) finished with 34 assists and three digs.
The visitors narrowly prevailed in the opening frame 26-24 to grab a 1-0 lead. Newbury doubled its advantage to 2-0 with a 25-19 decision in the second set.
Eastern Nazarene battled back to claim the third game 25-21, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The Lions leveled the match at 2-2 with a 25-23 win in the fourth, forcing a deciding fifth set.
The hosts capped off the comeback with a 15-8 victory in the fifth frame to earn the program's first win.
"What a comeback! I'm proud of the way they stayed in the match mentally and battled back. The team stuck together and worked hard all night," said first-year head coach Kaylee Hewitt.
Joshua Thorne led Newbury with 17 kills while Nile Fox chipped in with 10 kills in the match.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene returns to the court January 28 to host Elms.
