Men’s Tennis Sweeps Regis 9-0; Cristian Popa Collects 200th Win
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team rolled past Regis 9-0 Tuesday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts. With the win, 16th-year head coach Cristian Popa earned his 200th career victory. In his 16th year at the helm of the Eastern Nazarene men's tennis program, Popa has amassed 159 wins while also posting 41 victories in his 11 seasons leading the women's program.
The Lions climb to 9-6 on the year and 2-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference with the victory. The Pride falls to 6-8 overall and 0-1 in league play with the decision.
The home side tallied three doubles wins to capture a 3-0 lead.
Julius Opaschowski (Hamburg, Germany) and Henry Siercke (Hamburg, Germany) edged Nolan Berbata and Johnny Pallotta 8-6 at the top doubles position.
Tim Schoengens (Inden, Germany) and Diego Rodriguez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) downed Owen Pelissier and Sebastian Torres 8-3 at the No. 2 spot.
Kyle Pierson (Redding, Calif.) and Alberto Escobar (Sevilla, Spain) claimed an 8-4 win at the No. 3 slot over Mitchell Weiner and Cam Charbonneau.
Eastern Nazarene chalked up six singles victories to clinch its second conference win of the spring.
Siercke cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 1 singles position over Bebarta while Opaschowski breezed by Pallotta 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot.
Rodriguez blanked Charbonneau 6-0, 6-0 at the fourth singles slot and Schoengens registered a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 5 slot over Weiner.
Pierson picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Evan Russell at the No. 6 position.
Escobar topped Torres in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the second spot. After dropping the first set 6-3, Escobar battled back to prevail 7-6 in the second frame. In the super-tiebreaker, Escobar bested Torres 10-7 to post his seventh singles win of the year.
