Men’s Tennis Collects Conference-Opening Win Over Colby-Sawyer, 8-1
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team kicked off conference play with an 8-1 victory over Colby-Sawyer Saturday afternoon in the program's first-ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match.
The Lions jump to 8-6 on the season and 1-0 in the GNAC with the win. The Chargers fall to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in league competition with the setback.
The hosts notched three doubles wins to establish a 3-0 advantage.
Julius Opaschowski (Hamburg, Germany) and Henry Siercke (Hamburg, Germany) topped Alex Wright and Julius Lowman 8-3 at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Diego Rodriguez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Tim Schoengens (Inden, Germany) blanked Erik Antonacci and Matt Burke at the second slot 8-0.
Alberto Escobar (Sevilla, Spain) and Kyle Pierson (Redding, Calif.) collected an 8-2 victory at the No. 3 position over Mike White and Matt Williamson.
Eastern Nazarene earned wins in five of the six singles matches to claim its first league victory of the spring.
Siercke outlasted Wright in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the top singles position. Siercke captured the first set 6-4 and Wright responded with a 6-0 decision in the second frame. Siercke bounced back to down Wright in the super-tiebreaker 10-3.
Opaschowski cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory in the third singles match over Burke while Rodriguez rolled past Lowman 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 4 slot.
Schoengens breezed by Antonacci at the No. 5 spot 6-0, 6-2 and Pierson bested Williamson 6-1, 6-0 at the sixth position.
Escobar fell 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot to White.
