Men’s Tennis Suffers 6-3 Setback at Coast Guard
NEW LONDON, Conn.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team absorbed a 6-3 loss at the United State Coast Guard Academy Thursday in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
The Lions drop to 7-6 overall with the result while the Bears improve to 3-3 on the year.
The hosts grabbed a 2-1 edge at the conclusion of doubles action.
Alberto Escobar (Sevilla, Spain) and Kyle Pierson (Redding, Calif.) notched the visitors' lone doubles win, prevailing 8-6 at the No. 3 position over Arthur Wicke and Lucas Arora.
Julius Opaschowski (Hamburg, Germany) and Henry Siercke (Hamburg, Germany) endured an 8-5 loss to Tom Hackett and Jack Phillips at the top spot.
Tim Schoengens (Inden, Germany) and Diego Rodriguez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) narrowly fell at the No. 2 slot against Kyle Fager and Chris Lansing, 8-7.
Coast Guard collected four singles victories to earn its third win of the season.
Escobar edged Fager in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 2 singles position. Escobar claimed the first frame 6-4 and Faber battled back to capture the second set 6-1. In the super-tiebreaker, Escobar triumphed 11-9.
Opaschowski netted a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the No. 3 singles spot over Wicke to tally his team-leading seventh singles win of the year.
Siercke dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision at the No. 1 slot to Hackett while Rodriguez fell 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 4 position to Lansing.
Schoengens fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker to Phillips in the fifth singles match. Schoengens grabbed the first set 6-4 and Phillips responded with a 6-2 win in the second. In the super-tiebreaker, Phillips topped Schoengens 10-2.
Pierson suffered a 6-1, 6-2 setback against Arora at the No. 6 spot.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene starts conference play March 30 at home against Colby-Sawyer.
