HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team edged Ohio Northern 5-4 and absorbed a 7-2 loss to Spring Arbor Friday to wrap up its trip to the Palmetto State.
The Lions progress to 5-5 on the year with the outcomes. The Polar Bears move to 3-4 overall with the loss while the Cougars climb to 12-5 on the season with a win.
In the matinee match, Eastern Nazarene used strong singles play to clip Ohio Northern 5-4.
Kyle Pierson (Redding, Calif.) and Henry Siercke (Hamburg, Germany) claimed the Lions' lone doubles victory in the match. The duo downed Andrew Cochran and Connor Christian 8-3 at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Alberto Escobar (Sevilla, Spain) and Julius Opaschowski (Hamburg, Germany) fell to Noah Elliott and Vinh Thai at the top position 8-3.
Diego Rodriguez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Tim Schoengens (Inden, Germany) dropped an 8-1 decision to Zach Beaschler and Hoang Do at the second slot.
Eastern Nazarene erased a 2-1 deficit with four wins in singles play to clinch the match.
Opaschowski edged Beaschler in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 3 singles position. Opaschowski claimed the first set 6-1 and Beaschler grabbed the second frame 6-1. Opaschowski rebounded to triumph 10-6 in the super-tiebreaker.
Rodriguez prevailed in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 4 slot against Do. After conceding the first frame 6-1, Rodriguez captured the second set 7-6 en route to defeating Do 10-5 in the super-tiebreaker.
Schoengens clipped Cochran in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 5 singles spot. Schoengens fell 6-2 in the first set and clawed back with a 6-4 win in the second. In the super-tiebreaker, Schoengens prevailed 10-6.
Pierson notched a 7-5, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 singles position against Christian.
Siercke fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the top singles spot to Thai while Escobar dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision at the second slot to Elliott.
In their final match in Hilton Head, Eastern Nazarene suffered a 7-2 loss to Spring Arbor.
Schoengens and Rodriguez collected the Lions' only doubles win with an 8-4 decision at the No. 2 position against Alex Reinbold and Patrick Doerr.
Escobar and Opaschowski fell 8-2 at the top doubles spot to Nick Romano and Ryan MacLean.
Pierson and Siercke dropped a narrow 8-7 decision in the No. 3 doubles match against Connor Mogle and Brendan Bentley.
Rodriguez recorded Eastern Nazarene's lone singles victory, defeating Doerr 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 4 slot.
Siercke, Escobar, and Opaschowski all suffered straight-sets setbacks at the top three singles position, respectively, while Pierson fell 6-0, 6-1 in the sixth singles match.
Schoengens was edged in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 5 spot. Spring Arbor's Sam Head captured the first set 6-3 before Schoengens battled back to claim the second frame 7-5. In the super-tiebreaker, Head narrowly prevailed over Schoengens 11-9.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene returns to the Bay State to take on Salem State March 21 in a non-conference matchup.
