HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team defeated Baldwin-Wallace 7-2 before dropping a 9-0 decision to Missouri Valley Wednesday.
The Lions progress to 3-4 on the year with the results while the Yellow Jackets move to 5-1 overall and the Vikings reach 3-3 on the season.
In the morning clash against Baldwin-Wallace, Eastern Nazarene swept the doubles matches and collected four singles victories to clinch its second-straight win in the Palmetto State.
Julius Opaschowski (Hamburg, Germany) and Laurent Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) edged Dominic Polifrone and Matt Harris 8-7 at the top doubles position.
Alberto Escobar (Sevilla, Spain) and Henry Siercke (Hamburg, Germany) clipped Jake Elbin and Roger Boyer at the second doubles spot 8-7.
Diego Rodriguez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Tim Schoengens (Inden, Germany) rolled past Eddie Schartman and Ben Binion 8-1 at the No. 3 slot.
Rodriguez earned a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the fourth singles position over Michael Benotti. Schoengens topped Boyer 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot while Kyle Pierson (Redding, Calif.) claimed a 6-2, 6-0 win at the sixth singles slot against Schartman.
Opaschowski outlasted Elbin at the No. 3 position in a third-set super-tiebreaker. The Lions' sophomore captured the opening set 7-5 before Elbin leveled the match with a 6-4 decision in the second frame. Opaschowski battled back to prevail 12-10 in the super-tiebreaker.
In the nightcap, Eastern Nazarene fell to NAIA side Missouri Valley 9-0.
Opaschowski and Schoengens suffered an 8-2 setback at the top doubles position to Daisuke Aota and Kenta Kondou.
Escobar and Rodriguez absorbed an 8-4 loss to Ruben Hoekstra and Benedikt Voelker at the No. 2 spot.
Pierson and Siercke were edged 8-6 at the No. 3 slot by Guilherme Gumiero Albertinazzi and Marius Castella Durall.
Siercke and Escobar fell in straight sets at the top two singles positions, respectively. Opaschowski endured a 6-2, 6-2 loss at the No. 3 spot while Rodriguez dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision in the fourth singles match. Schoengens suffered a 6-3, 6-1 setback at the No. 5 position to Albertinazzi.
Pierson fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker 10-6 to Alberto Gomez Carrera at the No. 6 slot. Pierson conceded the first frame 6-2 and rebounded to claim the second set 6-3.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene continues its trip with a matchup with Methodist March 7.
