Men’s Tennis Sends Five Pairs to Stonehill Doubles Invitational
EASTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team opened the 2018-19 campaign at the Stonehill Doubles Invitational Saturday.
In the "A" flight, Alex Partyka (Moscow, Russia) and Laurent Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) reached the consolation bracket finals. The duo suffered an 8-6 loss to Coast Guard's Tom Hackett and Jack Phillips in the opening round. They defeated Michael Rosen and Richard Flandreau from Saint Anselm 8-4 before falling to Assumption's Danny Waung and Reb Mariano 8-4.
In the "B" flight, Santiago Camero (Valencia, Venezuela) and Henry Siercke (Hamburg, Germany) won the consolation bracket. After dropping their opening match to Henry DeCoster and Julian Tien from Connecticut College 8-1, the pair topped Daniel Kmetz and Ethan Hall of Saint Anselm to reach the consolation bracket finals. Camero and Siercke edged Roger Williams' Jared Deibe and Thomas O'Leary 7-3 in a tie-breaker.
In the "C" flight, Alberto Escobar (Sevilla, Spain) and Tim Schoengens (Inden, Germany) claimed fourth in the main bracket. The tandem bested Luke Whitehouse and Mitchell Butems from Assumption 8-6 then fell to Arthur Wicke and Lucas Arora from Coast Guard in the semifinals. In the third-place match, Escobar and Schoengens dropped an 8-4 decision to Jason Wood and Sam Kluger.
In the "D" flight, Julius Opaschowski (Hamburg, Germany) and Kyle Pierson (Redding, Calif.) rattled off three wins to capture the championship in a matchup against teammates Shaw Campbell (Redding, Calif.) and Jesus Lucart (Wylie, Texas).
Opaschowski and Pierson posted an 8-2 win in the quarterfinals before downing Aaron Diamond and Aleksander Lazowski 8-6 in the semifinals. Campbell and Lucart notched an 8-1 victory in the quarterfinals over Colby-Sawyer's Adam Kopp and Alex Wright and knocked off Roger Williams' Miles Conlin and Tyler Cain 8-4 in the semifinals.
In the "D" bracket finals, Opaschowski and Pierson registered an 8-2 victory over Campbell and Lucart.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene visits Division II foe Franklin Pierce September 11.
