Men’s Tennis Falls to Nichols 6-3 in Pivotal CCC Showdown
POMFRET, Conn.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team absorbed a 6-3 loss to Nichols in a rematch of last year's Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship match Saturday evening at the Pomfret School.
The Lions progress to 10-3 on the year and 2-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the setback. The Bison improve to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in league action with the win.
Nichols grabbed an early 2-1 advantage with a pair of doubles victories.
Alex Partyka (Moscow, Russia) and Laurent Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) edged Blake Norton and August Moeller 8-6 at the No. 1 doubles position.
Henry Siercke (Hamburg, Germany) and Kaden Swarr (Brighton, Colo.) narrowly fell 8-6 to Guilherme Barbosa and Peter Coletti at the second slot.
Santiago Camero (Valencia, Venezuela) and Julius Opaschowski (Hamburg, Germany) dropped an 8-2 decision to Brandon Howard and Igor Markowski at the No. 3 spot.
The Bison collected four singles wins to clinch their eighth victory in a row.
Opaschowski prevailed 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 5 singles position over Moeller for his fourth-consecutive win.
Kyle Pierson (Redding, Calif.) outlasted Jack Donaldson in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 6 spot. After conceding the opening set 6-3, Pierson stormed back to capture the second frame 6-4. The sophomore edged Donaldson 12-10 in the third-set super-tiebreaker to earn his team-best ninth singles victory of the season.
Partyka fell in a three-set battle at the top singles position to Howard. Partyka claimed the first set 6-3 and Howard rallied to seize the second set 6-4 before recording a 6-3 win in the third frame.
Siercke suffered a setback at the No. 2 spot to Barbosa in a third-set super-tiebreaker. After Barbosa nabbed the first set 6-3, Siercke bounced back to grab the second frame 7-6 after triumphing 7-4 in a tiebreaker. Barbosa rebounded to clip Siercke 10-3 in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
Camero and Ruttkowski endured straight-set losses at the third and fourth singles matches, respectively.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene returns home to host Wentworth April 10.
