Men’s Tennis Blanks Penn State-Behrend, 9-0
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team cruised to a 9-0 victory over Penn State-Behrend Tuesday afternoon in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
The Lions improve to 4-1 on the year while the Nittany Lions sink to 5-4 overall.
Eastern Nazarene swept the three doubles matches to build up a 3-0 advantage.
Alex Partyka (Moscow, Russia) and Laurent Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel) topped Yanique Apgar and Scott Russell at the No. 1 doubles position 8-5.
Santiago Camero (Valencia, Venezuela) and Henry Siercke (Hamburg, Germany) breezed by Noah Colvin and Brendan Dollard 8-1 at the second spot.
Shaw Campbell (Redding, Calif.) and Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) downed Michael Duckett and Brent McFarland at the third slot 8-3.
The Lions secured all six singles victories to clinch their third consecutive win.
At the top singles spot, Partyka edged Apgar in a third-set super-tiebreaker 10-8 after each player claimed a 6-4 decision.
Siercke prevailed in straight-sets at the No. 2 position 6-3, 6-4 over Scott Russell while Ruttkowski earned a 6-1,6-2 victory at the third singles match against McFarland.
Camero rolled past Dollard 6-1, 6-2 at the fourth slot and Steelman coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jeremy Burnheimer at the fifth spot.
Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) outlasted Brett Palmer at the No. 6 position in his first action of the season. Biondi narrowly fell 7-5 in a tie-breaker in the opening set before storming back to capture the second frame 6-1. The senior eked out a 13-11 victory in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene returns to the courts March 8 to battle Drew.
