Men’s Tennis Dealt 8-1 Loss at Springfield Friday
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision at Springfield College Friday afternoon.
The Lions move to 1-1 on the year while the Pride improves to 1-0 overall.
Santiago Camero (Toronto, Ontario) and Henry Siercke (Hamburg, Germany) were edged a the No. 1 doubles position 8-6 by Alex Romaine and Court Honda.
Shaw Campbell (Redding, Calif.) and Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) fell to Justin Danielewicz and Tanner DeVarennes at the second spot, 8-1.
Kyle Pierson (Redding, Calif.) and Kaden Swarr (Brighton, Colo.) suffered an 8-5 setback at the third doubles slot to Cameron Grant and Chris Unger.
Eastern Nazarene's lone victory on the day came at the No. 5 singles position as Steelman topped Grant 6-0, 6-3.
Campbell came up short in a hard-fought three-set match at the sixth slot against Zack Keene. After dropping the opening set, Campbell stormed back to prevail 6-4 in the second but conceded the third frame 6-3.
Pierson fell in a third-set super-tiebreaker at the No. 4 spot against Danielewicz. The rookie absorbed a 6-2 loss in the first set and rebounded to claim the second set 6-4. Pierson dropped the third-set super-tiebreaker to Danielewicz 10-3.
In the second singles match, Siercke endured a straight-set setback at the second singles position after nearly forcing a third set. The freshman fell 6-2 in the first frame and was edged in a tiebreaker 7-3 as Romaine triumphed 7-6 in the second set.
Camero suffered a 6-2, 6-3 loss at the No. 3 slot and Laurent Ruttkowski (Castrop-Rauxel, Germany) was handed a 6-1, 6-0 setback at the top singles spot.
Up next, the Lions return to the courts September 20 when they visit UMass-Dartmouth.
