Men’s Tennis Powers Past Penn State-Behrend in Hilton Head, 7-2
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team posted a 7-2 win over Penn State-Behrend in its first match in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Eastern Nazarene improves to 3-2 on the year with the win while Penn State-Behrend dips to 6-4 overall.
Eastern Nazarene collected a pair of doubles wins to establish a 2-1 edge.
Alex Partyka (Moscow, Russia) and Vladislav Tolmachev (Perm, Russia) cruised to an 8-1 victory over Yanique Apgar and Michael Funera at the No. 1 doubles position.
Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Shaw Campbell (Reading, Calif.) topped Brent McFarland and Jeremy Burnheimer at the second doubles spot 8-2.
Stephen Crooks (Collegeville, Pa.) and Brandon Jenkins (Norton, Mass.) were edged at the No. 3 doubles slot by Nick Kapty and Chris Heintz, 9-8.
Eastern Nazarene prevailed in five of the six singles matches en route to its first win of the spring season.
Partyka blanked Apgar at the No. 1 singles position to earn his first collegiate singles victory, 6-0, 6-0. Tolmachev also breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 2 slot over Eric Cho.
Shaw Campbell picked up a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Brett Palmer at the fourth spot and Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) tallied a 6-4, 6-4 win at the fifth spot against Burnheimer.
In the No. 6 singles match, Jenkins notched his first collegiate victory over Funera in a third-set super-tiebreaker. Jenkins conceded the opening set 7-5 before storming back to capture the second frame 6-0. The rookie edged Funera in the super-tiebreaker 10-8 to complete the comeback.
Paterno suffered a three-set loss at the No. 3 position to McFarland. The senior dropped the first set 6-4 and evened the match with a 6-2 victory in the second set before falling 6-4 in the third frame.
Eastern Nazarene continues play in the Palmetto State Tuesday, March 8 against Marietta.
