Men’s Tennis Shines at Fall Invitational Saturday
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team swept the singles, doubles and overall competition at the annual ENC Fall Invitational.
The Lions racked up 75 total points on the day to capture the team crown. Johnson & Wales (R.I.) placed second with 40 total points while UMass-Boston came up short with a third-place finish.
In the singles competition, Vladislav Tolmachev (Perm, Russia) and Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) each notched two victories in round-robin play to earn a spot in the finals. Paterno claimed the singles title after Tolmachev withdrew.
Paterno topped Nick Auffret from Johnson & Wales 6-0, 6-1 before downing UMass-Boston's Josh Bhasin.
Tolmachev collected straight-set wins over Andre Barbero from Johnson & Wales and UMass-Boston's Jack Wang.
In the doubles competition, Shaw Campbell (Reading, Calif.) and Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) captured the title after defeating Johnson and Wales' Mars Wala and Jorge Mancebo in the finals 8-3.
Campbell and Steelman bested UMass-Boston's Vlad Leopard and Tim Tran before falling to Wala and Mancebo.
Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Yahalel Carter (Chicago, Ill.) reached the semifinals after posting a 1-1 record in round-robin play. The duo defeated Guang Huang and Wyatt Towle of UMass-Boston after dropping an 8-6 decision to Taylor Farmer and Jason Chavenson of Johnson & Wales.
Biondi and Carter suffered an 8-3 setback to Wala and Mancebo in the semifinals.
Campbell and Steelman advanced to the doubles championship match after topping Farmer and Chavenson 8-5 in the semifinal round.
Eastern Nazarene will return to action in March as it returns to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for its annual spring break trip.
