Men’s Tennis Clipped at Gordon in CCC Quarterfinals, 5-4
WENHAM, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team suffered a 5-4 loss at Gordon in the Commonwealth Coast Conference quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon.
The fifth-seeded Lions end the season with a 10-8 overall record. The fourth-seeded Fighting Scots improve to 15-4 on the year and advance to the semifinal round to face top-seeded Roger Williams.
The visitors captured a pair of doubles wins to seize a 2-1 advantage.
Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) notched an 8-3 victory at the No. 2 doubles position over Michael D'Antuono and Peter Godwin.
Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) topped James Hawn and Joe Daugherty 8-6 at the third spot.
Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Vladislav Tolmachev (Perm, Russia) were edged 8-6 at the top doubles slot by Zach Hall and Mason Casady.
Gordon rallied to claim four singles victories to clinch the match 5-4.
McKay-Corkum, an All-CCC second team singles selection, prevailed at the No. 3 singles position 6-1, 6-3 over D'Antuono.
Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) collected a 6-4, 6-1 win in the fourth singles match against Hawn.
In a battle of two All-CCC first team honorees, Tolmachev fell to Hall 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot.
Son endured a 7-6 (1), 6-2 setback at the second singles slot to Casady. Steelman dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Godwin at the fifth position.
Perron absorbed a three-set loss at the No. 6 position to Daugherty. Perron claimed the opening set 6-3 before conceding the second 6-1. In the deciding third set, Daugherty edged Perron 7-5 to send the Fighting Scots into the semifinal round.
