Men’s Tennis Tops Western New England, 6-3
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team netted a 6-3 victory at Western New England Saturday afternoon.
The Lions improve to 8-6 on the season and 2-3 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the victory. The Golden Bears fall to 7-6 overall and 3-4 in league play with the result.
The home team tallied two doubles victories to establish a 2-1 lead.
Eastern Nazarene's top duo of Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Vladislav Tolmachev (Perm, Russia) earned an 8-5 win over Andres Otero and PJ Nassar.
Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) suffered an 8-4 setback at the No. 2 position to Alexander Sause and Adam Zimmerman.
Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) absorbed an 8-3 loss to the third spot to Chris Spear and Greg Tischofer.
The guests racked up five singles wins to notch their second conference victory of the spring.
Tolmachev collected a 6-3, 7-6 win at the top singles slot over Otero. McKay-Corkum prevailed 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 2 position over Sause. Son claimed a 6-2, 6-4 win in the third singles match against Spear.
Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) picked up a victory at the fourth spot as his opponent retired with the third set tied at 2-2. Paterno conceded the first set 6-2 and bounced back to take the second 6-3.
Steelman dropped a three-set decision to Zimmerman at the No. 5 slot. After losing the opening set 6-1, Steelman stormed back to capture the second frame 6-4 before being edge 7-5 in the deciding set.
Perron downed Tischofer in straight sets at the sixth spot, triumphing 6-1, 7-6.
