Men’s Tennis Blanks UMass-Boston, 9-0
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team bested UMass-Boston 9-0 in non-league action at the ENC Tennis Courts Tuesday afternoon.
The Lions improve to 7-5 on the year with the victory while the Beacons fall to 3-8 overall.
The home team collected three doubles wins to establish a 3-0 lead at the start of singles play.
Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Vladislav Tolmachev (Perm, Russia) battled past UMass-Boston's Charles Lai and Austin DeLasse 8-6 at the No. 1 position.
Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) claimed an 8-2 win at the second doubles spot over Greg Fleming and Jack Wang.
Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) posted an 8-2 victory in the third doubles match against Vlad Leopard and Wyatt Towle.
The Lions triumphed in all six singles matches to earn their second consecutive sweep.
At the top singles spot, Tolmachev prevailed in a third-set super-tiebreaker against Lai. The rookie captured the opening set 6-4 before dropping the second set 6-4. Tolmachev edged Lai in the deciding tiebreaker 10-8.
McKay-Corkum cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over DeLasse at the No. 2 slot while Son breezed by Fleming in the third singles match 6-1, 6-1.
Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) prevailed in straight sets at the fourth spot 6-3, 7-6 over Wang. Steelman picked up a 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 position against Towle.
Perron rolled past Leonard 6-1, 6-1 at the sixth slot to extend his winning-streak to six matches.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene resumes conference play April 16 with a home match against Nichols.
