Men’s Tennis Falls to League-Leading Roger Williams 6-3
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team suffered a 6-3 setback to Roger Williams University Saturday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts.
The Lions dip to 5-5 on the season and 1-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the result. The Hawks improve to 8-4 overall and remain unbeaten in league action at 5-0.
The visitors claimed two doubles victories to grab a 2-1 edge.
Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) posted the hosts' lone doubles win on the day, prevailing 8-4 at the No. 2 doubles position over Grant Rosenberg and Jonah Schwartz.
Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Vladislav Tolmachev (Perm, Russia) dropped an 8-4 decision to Eric Laboissoniere and Ryan Swanson at the top spot. Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) were edged in the third doubles match by Kyle Bull and Zack Bussiere, 8-6.
Roger Williams captured four wins in singles play to lock up their fifth consecutive conference win.
Perron and Steelman picked up Eastern Nazarene's only two singles victories on the afternoon as each notched their fourth win in a row.
Steelman downed Bull at the No. 5 slot 6-4, 6-3. Perron collected his team-leading seventh singles victory of the year with a three-set win at the No. 6 position against Rosenberg. The senior claimed the first set 6-4 before dropping the second set 6-2 and bouncing back to earn a 10-3 victory in the third-set super-tiebreaker.
Tolmachev absorbed a 6-3, 6-1 loss at the No. 1 spot to Laboissoniere. McKay-Corkum fell to Bussiere at the second slot 6-2, 6-1.
Paterno dropped a 7-6, 6-2 decision to Swanson in the third singles match while Biondi lost in straight sets to Schwartz at the fourth position.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene steps out of conference play to host Emerson April 13.
