Men’s Tennis Blanks Wentworth in Conference Opener
DORCHESTER, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team opened league play with a 7-0 victory over Wentworth at Sportsman Park Monday evening.
The Lions improve to 5-3 on the season and 1-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Leopards drop to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in conference matches.
Eastern Nazarene swept the doubles points to claim a 3-0 lead.
Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.) notched an 8-3 win at the top doubles spot over James Drum and Jeff Tocco.
Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Vladislav Tolmachev (Perm, Russia) cruised to an 8-1 victory at the No. 2 position over Nate Schwartz and James Thomas.
Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) topped Wentworth's Josh Dowd and Sean Nolan 8-5 at the third slot.
In singles action, the Lions locked up four wins to earn their first conference win of the spring.
Tolmachev breezed by Drum 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles match while McKay-Corkum recorded a 6-2, 6-1 victory at the second spot over Schwartz.
Steelman prevailed 6-1, 6-2 at the fifth position against Zach Peter. Perron secured a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Mike Withington at the No. 6 slot.
Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) held a 3-2 lead in the second set after conceding the first 6-2 at the No. 3 position when the match was halted while Biondi controlled a 3-1 advantage in the second frame after capturing the opening set 6-2 in the fourth singles match.
