Men’s Tennis Falls at Wheaton Wednesday, 5-1
NORTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team suffered a 5-1 setback at Wheaton (Mass.) Wednesday.
The loss pushes the Lions to 4-3 on the year. The Lyons improve to 3-0 overall with the win.
Eastern Nazarene trailed Wheaton 2-1 after picking up one victory in doubles play.
Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) and Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.) prevailed 8-6 over Tyler Butler and Alden Zeff at the No. 3 doubles position.
Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Vladislav Tolmachev (Perm, Russia) dropped a 7-4 decision in a tiebreaker at the top spot to David Gassen and Lawrence Chan. Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) absorbed an 8-3 loss to Will White and Shreve Archer at the second slot.
Wheaton notched three singles wins to secure the victory.
Tolmachev endured a 6-3, 6-1 setback at the No. 1 singles position to Gassen. McKay-Corkum fell to White 6-1, 6-1 in the second singles match. Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) suffered a 6-1, 6-2 loss at the fourth spot to Archer.
When the match was called, the third, fifth and sixth singles matches were still in progress.
Son owned a 4-2 lead in the second set after dropping the first set 7-5 at the No. 3 slot. In the fifth singles match, Steelman claimed the opening set 6-4 but trailed 3-1 in the second. Perron was down 5-1 in the first frame at the No. 6 spot.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene opens conference play against Endicott March 25.
