Men’s Tennis Cruises Past Salve Regina, 8-1
NEWPORT, R.I.- The Eastern Nazarene men's tennis team downed Salve Regina 8-1 Wednesday afternoon.
The Lions improve to 6-7 on the season and 3-2 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Seahawks fall to 0-8 overall and 0-5 in league matches.
Eastern Nazarene swept the three doubles matches to hold a 3-0 lead.
Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) posted an 8-3 victory at the top spot. Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) breezed by Monaf Awwa and Matthew Carroll at the second doubles position, 8-1. Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) prevailed 8-3 at the third slot.
The Lions captured five singles wins to earn their third conference victory of the year.
McKay-Corkum topped Salve Regina's Colin Gunning 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles position. Perron picked up a 6-0, 6-2 victory at the third spot.
Paterno notched a 6-3, 6-2 win at the fourth singles slot to claim his eighth singles victory of the season. Steelman prevailed in straight sets at the No. 5 position, 6-1, 6-1.
In the sixth singles match, Thompson edged C.J. Maksut 7-4 in a first-set tie-breaker to capture the first frame 7-6 before securing a 6-2 decision in the second set.
Biondi suffered a straight-set loss at the No. 2 spot to Khoa Nguyen. Biondi dropped the first set 6-1 before falling 7-3 in a second-set tie-breaker.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene returns to the Ocean State to face off against Roger Williams April 12.
