Men’s Tennis Claims 7-1 Win Over Wentworth in CCC Opener
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene men's tennis team posted a 7-1 victory over Wentworth Saturday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts in its first league match of the year.
The Lions improve to 4-5 on the season and 1-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the win. The Leopards sink to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in conference action with the loss.
Eastern Nazarene swept the three doubles matches.
Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.) prevailed 8-1 at the No. 3 doubles position over Gaurav Tilva and Dylan Melnik.
Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) notched an 8-1 win at the top doubles spot, downing James Drum and Matthew Smith.
Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) battled back from a 4-0 deficit to edge Wentworth's Nate Schwartz and Josh Dowd 8-6 at the No. 2 slot.
McKay-Corkum picked up the Lions' fourth point of the match with a straight-sets victory at the No. 1 singles position, defeating Drum 6-0, 6-2.
Son clinched Eastern Nazarene's first conference win of the year with a 6-2, 6-0 decision at the fourth singles spot.
Paterno bested Schwartz at the No. 3 singles slot 6-2, 6-2. Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) topped Melnik at the No. 5 position. The rookie claimed the first set 6-3 before triumphing 7-3 in a tiebreaker to secure a 7-6 win in the second frame.
Up next, the Lions will challenge preseason CCC favorite Nichols on the road April 1.
