Men’s Tennis Edged by UMass-Boston Thursday, 5-4
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene men's tennis team suffered a 5-4 setback to UMass-Boston Thursday afternoon in a non-conference match.
The Lions fall to 3-5 on the season while the Beacons improve to 1-5 overall with the result.
Eastern Nazarene boasted a 2-1 advantage at the beginning of singles action.
Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) prevailed 8-2 at the No. 2 doubles position over Lyle Analetto and Eglis Bizhoti. Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) posted an 8-4 victory at the third slot against Jack Wang and Mark Grinhaus.
Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) dropped an 8-2 decision to Charles Lai and Sean Cullen at the top doubles spot.
UMass-Boston rallied in singles play with four wins en route to grabbing a 5-4 victory, its first of the year.
Paterno notched a 6-4, 7-5 win over Wang at the No. 4 singles match, his team-leading fifth singles win of the season.
Thompson improved to 5-2 on the season in singles action with a three-set victory at the No. 6 position. The senior claimed the opening set 7-5 before dropping the second frame 6-1. Thompson rebounded to double up Analetto in a third-set super-tiebreaker, 10-5.
McKay-Corkum absorbed a three-set loss at the No. 2 slot against Lai. After conceding the first set 6-2, McKay-Corkum leveled the match with a 6-4 win in the second set. McKay-Corkum fell 6-0 in the deciding third frame.
Biondi and Perron each endured 6-1, 6-0 loss at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles spots, respectively. Steelman was edged by Grinhaus at the fifth singles match, dropping a pair of 7-5 sets.
Up next, the Lions open Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a home match against Wentworth March 29.
