Men’s Tennis Aced by Division II Foe Assumption, 9-0
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.- The Eastern Nazarene men's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback to NCAA Division II Assumption Tuesday afternoon in Hilton Head Island.
The Lions slide to 2-2 on the season while the Greyhounds jump to 2-4 overall with the result.
Assumption swept the three doubles matches to snag a 3-0 advantage.
Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Andres Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) dropped an 8-2 decision to Chris Waung and Vijami Rahnasto at the top position. Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) endured an 8-5 setback at the No. 2 doubles spot while Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) fell 8-4 at the third slot.
The Greyhounds logged six wins in singles play to secure the victory.
McKay-Corkum absorbed a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Waung in the No. 1 singles match and Biondi was blanked by Rahnasto at the second position, 6-0, 6-0. Perron fell to Marco Leung 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 singles spot.
Paterno dropped a three-set decision, narrowly falling to Michael Breen in a super-tiebreaker. Paterno prevailed in the opening frame 6-3 before Breen leveled the match with a 6-3 win in the second set. Breen edged Paterno in the third-set super-tiebreaker 11-9.
Steelman and Thompson both endured losses at the fifth and sixth singles slots, respectively.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will look to snap its two-match skid as it takes on Wittenberg March 12 to continue its spring break trip.
