Men’s Tennis Caps Off Fall with Strong Performances at ENC Invitational
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene men's tennis team hosted its annual ENC Invitational fall tournament Saturday. Curry and UMass-Boston also competed in the tournament.
In the singles competition, Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) of Eastern Nazarene captured two wins in the Red Group. McKay-Corkum defeated Curry's Toma Blatchford 6-2, 6-2 and topped UMass-Boston's Sean Cullen 6-2, 6-2.
Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) went 1-1 in the Blue Group as he downed Curry's Lucas Donaway 6-3, 6-1 before falling to David Hernandez of UMass-Boston 6-3, 6-1.
In the semifinals of the singles draw, McKay-Corkum prevailed 6-2, 6-4 over Perron. McKay-Corkum absorbed a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Hernandez in the finals.
In the doubles competition, Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Gregory Parenteau (Wolcott, Conn.) posted a pair of wins in the Blue Group while Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) went 1-1 in the Red Group.
Paterno and Parenteau blanked Frank LaMotte and Nick Ironsides of Curry before edging Lyle Analetto and Sang Nguyen from UMass-Boston.
Thompson and Steelman swept Curry's Eric Hellberg and Joe Berger 8-0 and suffered an 8-5 loss to Eglis Bizhoti and Charles Lai of UMass-Boston.
Steelman and Thompson topped Paterno and Parenteau in the semifinal round 8-1. The duo went on to claim a 9-8 victory in the finals over Bizhoti and Lai, avenging their earlier loss in the group stage.
The Lions return to the courts in the spring as they head south for their annual spring break training trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C. March 10-14.
