ENC Men’s Tennis Downs UMass-Dartmouth, 6-3
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene men's tennis team claimed a 6-3 victory over UMass-Dartmouth Thursday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts.
The Lions improve to 2-0 on the year while the Corsairs fall to 0-1 overall.
Eastern Nazarene swept the doubles matches to hold a 3-0 advantage.
Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) edged out a 9-8 decision at the No. 1 doubles position after prevailing 7-1 in a tie-breaker. Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) posted an 8-1 win at the second doubles spot. Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and Gregory Parenteau (Wolcott, Conn.) picked up an 8-4 victory at the third doubles slot.
The two squads split the six singles matches as the Lions secured their second-straight win.
At the top singles position, McKay-Corkum claimed the first set 6-4 before his opponent retired with an injury.
Paterno posted a 7-6, 6-4 victory at the No. 3 singles spot over Ray Lawton. Thompson notched a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 5 slot.
Perron dropped a three-set decision at the second singles position. He conceded the first set 6-3 and rallied to even the match with a 6-2 victory in the second. Perron was edged 10-6 in a third-set super-tiebreaker.
Steelman also suffered a setback in three sets. After prevailing 6-3 in the opening frame, the rookie fell 6-4, 7-6.
Yahalel Carter (Chicago, Ill.) absorbed an 8-7 loss at the No. 6 singles slot.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will host the ENC Invitational Tournament October 5.
