Men’s Tennis Triumphs at Western New England, 7-2
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene men’s tennis team wrapped up the 2013 regular season with a 7-2 victory on the road at Western New England Wednesday afternoon.
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene men's tennis team wrapped up the 2013 regular season with a 7-2 victory on the road at Western New England Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Lions improve to 10-7 on the year and close out the Commonwealth Coast Conference slate with a 6-2 mark. The Golden Bears fall to 7-9 overall and 4-4 in league matches.
With the win, Eastern Nazarene locked up the No. 3 seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament. The Lions will host sixth-seeded Wentworth April 27 at 1:00 pm in the quarterfinal round.
The visitors swept the doubles points to claim a 3-0 lead before winning four of six singles matches to seal the victory.
Austin Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) posted an 8-5 win at the top position. Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Tim Luz (Cumberland, R.I.) earned an 8-3 decision at the No. 2 slot. Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) and Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) prevailed 8-4 at the No. 3 spot.
In singles play, Steelman cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 1 position over Chris Holzinger. McKay-Corkum edged Alex Sause in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 10-5 at the second spot. Luz downed Western New England's Andres Otero 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 3 slot. Perron registered a 6-2, 6-2 win at the fourth position over Ethan Belisle.
Paterno and Thompson each suffered setbacks on the day, falling in three sets each.
