QUINCY, Mass. – The Eastern Nazarene College men's tennis team rounded out non-conference play with a 5-4 loss to UMass-Boston Monday afternoon at the ENC Tennis Courts. The Lions drop to 7-6 on the season while the Beacons reach 6-3 overall with the outcome.
The visitors notched a pair of doubles victories to hold a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.
Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) and Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) improved to 8-4 on the year with the home team's lone doubles win on the day, an 8-2 decision at the No. 3 doubles slot.
Austin Steelman (Darlington, Md.) and Nick Thompson (York, Pa.) suffered an 8-6 loss at the top position. Tim Luz (Cumberland, R.I.) and Sam McKay-Corkum (Rehoboth, Mass.) fell 8-2 at the No. 2 spot.
The two squads split the six singles matches as UMass-Boston secured its fourth-consecutive win.
Steelman picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the No. 1 position over Sean Cullen. Paterno topped the Beacons' Eglis Bizhoti 7-5, 6-3 at the fifth slot. Perron notched his second win of the season playing at the No. 6 spot, prevailing 6-2, 6-0.
McKay-Corkum dropped a pair of closely contested sets at the second singles position, 6-4, 7-5. Luz absorbed a 6-3, 6-4 loss at the No. 4 slot to Charles Lai. Playing in just his third match of the spring, Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.) fell at the No. 3 spot to Alex Loyer.
Eastern Nazarene returns to Commonwealth Coast Conference action as it travels to Wenham, Mass. to battle Gordon April 10.
