Red-Hot Men’s Soccer Tops Mitchell 4-0 for 10th-Straight Win
QUINCY, Mass.- Ignited by two goals and one assist by Leon Zaffonato (Canela, Brazil), the Eastern Nazarene College men's soccer team defeated Mitchell 4-0 Saturday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium to extend its program-record winning-streak to 10-consecutive matches.
The Lions improve to 10-1-0 on the year and 3-0-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference with the victory. The Mariners dip to 1-8-1 overall and 0-2-0 in conference action with the setback.
Eastern Nazarene established a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute. Zaffonato blasted a left-footed shot from inside the box past the visitors' goalkeeper to bag his fifth goal of the season.
The Lions doubled their advantage to 2-0 just moments later in the 15th minute. Zaffonato netted his second marker of the match as he elevated a shot over the on-rushing goalkeeper. Carlos Moya (Oviedo, Spain) registered his second assist of the fall with a driven pass to Zaffonato.
The hosts tacked on their third score of the opening half in the 27th minute to extend their lead to 3-0. Charlie Swann (London, England) flicked in his league-leading 11th tally of the season after Sunil Lepcha (Charlotte, N.C.) sent a left-footed cross into the box from the left wing.
Eastern Nazarene sported a 10-3 advantage in shots and a 3-1 margin in corner kicks earned through 45 minutes of action.
The Lions added a goal in the 50th minute to push their advantage to 4-0. Zaffonato scorched a low free-kick delivery into the box and Kirby Georgeon (Brockton, Mass.) ran onto the pass at the far post to knock in his first tally of the fall.
The home side racked up 17 shots and seven corner kicks on the night. Mitchell produced 10 attempts and earned a pair of corner kicks in the contest.
Sophomore Tyler Ferreira (Berkley, Mass.) collected three saves in his ninth start of the year between the pipes to record his third-straight clean sheet.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene continues its stretch of six-straight home matches with a non-conference tilt against Pine Manor October 9.
