Men’s Soccer Falls to CCC Frontrunner Gordon Saturday Night
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's soccer team endured a 7-0 loss to league-leader Gordon Saturday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Lions drop to 5-5-2 overall and 1-3-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the setback. The Fighting Scots, who are receiving votes in the NSCAA and D3Soccer.com National Polls, improve to 9-1-1 on the year and remain atop the conference standings with a 4-0-1 mark.
Gordon grabbed a 1-0 edge in the 22nd minute. Matt Chartier notched his seventh tally of the season as his shot from beyond the penalty box deflected off the crossbar and landed inside the goal.
The visitors tacked on their second goal in the 41st minute. Mark Smith finished off a pass across the goal mouth by Caleb Cole to collect his third marker of the year.
The Fighting Scots added a score in the 43rd minute to push their lead to 3-0 before the break. Josh Cochran lasered a long-range shot into the upper corner of the cage for his sixth goal of the fall.
Gordon chalked up its fourth goal in the 66th minute. Ben Gradert headed home his first score of the year while Danny Nkhalamba and Jerry Williams each earned an assist.
The Fighting Scots widened the gap to 5-0 in the 76th minute. Smith netted his second tally of the game as he nodded in a cross off the boot of Michael Cuocci from the left wing.
The guests pushed their advantage to 6-0 in the 78th minute. Williams headed in a corner kick delivery by Ricardo Infantozzi for his second strike of the season.
Gordon tallied its seventh goal of the match in the 79th minute as Williams and Infantozzi combined for the second time on the night with Williams finishing off Infantozzi's free kick service.
Eastern Nazarene attempted five shots in the contest as five different players recorded one shot. The Fighting Scots concluded the game with 20 chances.
Victor Mendoza (Cathedral, Calif.) registered seven saves between the pipes for the home side.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will square off against Salve Regina in a pivotal conference contest October 10.
