Men’s Soccer Storms Past Green Mountain, 5-0
POULTNEY, Vt.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's soccer team blanked Green Mountain 5-0 Wednesday afternoon in non-league action.
The Lions improve to 3-2-1 overall while the Eagles drop to 0-4-0 on the season.
The visitors opened the scoring in the 24th minute to seize a 1-0 edge. Jannon Smith (Huntington, N.Y.) notched his first collegiate goal off of an assist by Ryan Chambers (Charlotte, N.C.).
Eastern Nazarene extended its lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute. Seth Weaver (Dillsburg, Pa.) netted his fourth tally of the year as Joao Costa (Framingham, Mass.) provided the assist.
The Lions held a 19-1 margin in first-half shot attempts at the halftime intermission.
The guests tacked on their third goal of the game in the 57th minute. Nabil Chamoun (Walpole, Mass.) collected his first career score while Andrew Nelson (Burtonsville, Md.) earned an assist.
Eastern Nazarene widened the gap to 4-0 in the 62nd minute on Weaver's team-leading fifth marker of the fall.
The Lions pushed the score to 5-0 in the 69th minute to finish off the scoring. David Eddings (Endicott, N.Y.) tallied his fifth goal of the season and Nelson dished out his team-leading fifth assist of the season on the strike.
The guests concluded the contest with 36 total shots while limiting Green Mountain to six attempts.
Jameson MacFarland (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Victor Mendoza (Cathedral, Calif.) combined for the clean sheet with neither netminder facing a shot on frame. MacFarland logged just over 65 minutes of action and Mendoza manned the cage for the final 24 minutes.
"The guys worked hard and showed great energy despite the long trek. We possessed the ball well and our excellent passing produced quality goals. The team is excited to start conference games," said head coach Mark Bell.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene begins its conference slate September 17 at Western New England.
