Men’s Soccer Downs Wentworth 4-1, Earns First Conference Win
BOSTON, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene men's soccer team secured its first league victory of the fall Saturday, topping Wentworth Institute of Technology 4-1.
The Lions improve to 5-6-0 on the season and 1-3-0 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference. The Leopards sink to 4-4-3 overall and 2-2-0 in league matches with the loss.
Eastern Nazarene and Wentworth headed into the halftime intermission level at 0-0 with the home team holding a 10-5 edge in shots.
The visitors tallied three goals in a five-minute span starting with a score by Will Campbell (Anchorage, Alaska) in the 64th minute. Rookie Chris Garcia (Gaithersburg, Md.) heaved a long throw-in into the penalty area and Campbell headed the ball into the back of the net for his first of the fall.
The Lions added a goal in the 67th minute as Scott Hansen (Middletown Springs, Vt.) buried his fourth marker of the year. Andrew Nelson (Burtonsville, Md.) raced down the left wing before serving a cross into the middle of the box that Hansen booted past the Leopards goalkeeper and inside the right post.
Eastern Nazarene picked up its third tally of the match in the 69th minute to stretch the margin to 3-0. After Hansen was hauled down inside the box, senior Austin Boucher (Mansfield, Mass.) stepped up and converted the resulting penalty kick for his second score of the season.
Wentworth pulled one back to narrow the deficit to 3-1 in the 73rd minute. Alec Watkinson netted his second goal of the fall off of an assist from Max Hilchuk.
The Lions restored their lead to three in the 85th minute, 4-1. Rookie Erick Pinaud (Norwalk, Conn.) blasted a shot into the upper left corner of the cage for his first collegiate goal.
Both squads generated nine second half shots as the Leopards finished the contest with a 19-14 advantage.
Senior Jake Johnson (Mount Bethel, Pa.) was turned aside five shots in the game for the Lions.
