Men’s Golf Places Third at Mitchell Invitational; Dietz Fires School-Record 72
GROTON, Conn.- The Eastern Nazarene College men's golf team opened its season with a third-place finish at the Mitchell Invitational Friday afternoon at Shennecossett Golf Club.
The Lions matched the lowest team score in program history with a 337. Eastern Nazarene bested Albertus Magnus by 47 strokes and came in just behind Mitchell at 330 while Wentworth captured the team title with a 306.
Sophomore Michael Dietz (North Charleston, S.C.) paced the field with a one-over-par 72 to set a new school record. Dietz finished with five birdies on the day to go along with 10 pars.
Jacob Waldroop (Newland, N.C.) carded a 77 to earned fourth-place in the individual standings.
Sam Danis (Uxbridge, Mass.) posted a career-best 91 while Connor Simpson (Haverhill, Mass.) shot a 97.
"I'm extremely proud of our guys and thrilled with our performance in the first event of the season. Michael had a break-through performance today and really showed his potential. I'm excited for this season and this hard-working group of student-athletes," commented head coach Toni Kabilian.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene will compete at the MCLA Invitational at the Berkshire Hills Country Club in Pittsfield, Massachusetts September 13.
