Jaylen Owens Tabbed CCC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- For the fourth time this season, sophomore Jaylen Owens (Johns Creek, Ga.) of the Eastern Nazarene men's basketball team has been named the Commonwealth Coast Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday.
Owens helped the Lions post a 1-1 record in the final week of the regular season, averaging 24.5 points and 3.5 assists per game on the week.
The sophomore guard poured in a career-best 33 points in Eastern Nazarene's 88-84 loss to league-leading Nichols. Owens connected on 11-of-21 shots in the contest, including four three-pointers and 7-of-8 shooting from the free throw line. He also added a pair of assists and one rebound in the Lions' final regular season home game.
Owens wrapped up the regular season with 16 points, five assists, two steals and two rebounds as Eastern Nazarene topped Gordon 75-66.
The win elevated the Lions to the No. 2 seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs. The victory marked Eastern Nazarene's first win over the Fighting Scots since the 2007-08 season and its first win at Gordon since the 2000-01 campaign.
Owens shot 53% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc on the week while sinking nine free throws on 10 attempts.
Owens and the Lions will host a CCC playoff game for the second consecutive season. Eastern Nazarene will take on Wentworth, the seventh-seeded team in the tournament, in the quarterfinal round February 25 at 7 pm.
