NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team dropped a pair of decisions to league-leading Mitchell Thursday afternoon at UMass Dartmouth Baseball Field, falling 4-0 and 4-1.
The Lions slip to 18-16 on the year and 7-7 in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) with the setbacks. The Mariners improve to 29-6 overall and 13-1 in conference action with the wins.
Matthew Urena (Flushing, N.Y.) paced the offense with two hits and one RBI on the day. Josue Basilis (Bronx, N.Y.) finished with one base knock and one run scored. Dylan Louviaux (Mohnton, Pa.), Steven Pesce (Harrison, N.Y.), and Connor Simpson (Haverhill, Mass.) all added one hit.
In game one, Mitchell blanked Eastern Nazarene 4-0 for its 14th-consecutive win.
Mitchell captured a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Peter Abate laced a single up the middle to plate Dougie DelaCruz and Markus Melendez.
The Mariners tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth to widen the gap to 4-0. Eric Marriott flared a single down the left field line to drive in Jeremy Santos from second base. Melendez followed with a double down the right field line to score Marriott.
Brent Houle (Westfield, Mass.) hurled 6.1 innings and fanned six batters in his eighth start of the spring. Morgan Weast (Cincinnati, Ohio) worked two-thirds of an inning of relief in his eighth appearance.
In the second contest, Mitchell rallied late to pick up a 4-1 victory to stretch its winning-streak to 15 in a row.
The Lions seized a 1-0 edge with a run in the bottom of the second. Urena lashed a two-out single to knock in Basilis.
The Mariners vaulted ahead 2-1 with two runs in the sixth. DelaCruz roped a double to the left field corner to drive in Melendez. DelaCruz crossed the dish as Steven Pagan reached on an error.
Mitchell scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to widen the gap to 4-1. Steve Cochrane raked a two-out hit to plate Melendez and Marriott.
Briley Seiter (Bellevue, Ky.) tossed six innings and registered a pair of strikeouts in his eighth start of the year. Daniel Rivera (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) pitched one frame in his team-leading 13th outing of the season.
