Baseball Falls to Wentworth, 13-2, Wednesday
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team absorbed a 13-2 loss to Wentworth Wednesday afternoon at Adams Field.
The Lions dip to 16-12 on the season with the result while the Leopards improve to 8-19 overall.
Joshua Bombard (Rutland, Mass.) and Connor Simpson (Haverhill, Mass.) each notched one hit and one run scored on the day. Anthony Esposito (Mount Royal, N.J.), Will Francis (Midlothian, Va.), Dylan Louviaux (Mohnton, Pa.), and Steven Pesce (Harrison, N.Y.) all chipped in with one base knock.
The visitors generated five runs in the top of the first inning to claim a 5-0 advantage. Jake Smith singled to left to drive in Aidan French. Ross Golebiewski followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Andrew Elloitt. Dan Mitchell and Jack Ruprecht each roped RBI doubles before Nolan McManus landed an RBI single with two outs.
Wentworth tacked on three runs in the fifth to widen the margin to 8-0. Smith scampered home from third on a groundout by Mitchell. Ruprecht laced a single to right field to knock in Golebiewski. McManus picked up his second two-out RBI of the contest with a single to right.
Eastern Nazarene got on the board in the home half of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 8-1. Bombard scored from second base as Josue Basilis (Bronx, N.Y.) reached on a fielder's choice.
The Leopards responded with two run in the sixth to extend their lead to 10-1. Smith and Golebiewski lifted back-to-back sacrifice flies to drive in Matt Bishop and Elliott.
The Lions chalked up one run in the bottom of the sixth frame to trim the gap to 10-2. Simpson tagged up motored home from third base as Zachary Carmody (Babylon, N.Y.) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.
The guests produced a pair of scores in the eighth to stretch their advantage to 12-2. Justin Kirst drew a bases-loaded walk to score French. Matt Masciadrelli collected an RBI as he reached on a fielder's choice that knocked in Bishop.
Wentworth capped off the scoring with a run in the ninth as Bishop raked a two-out triple to plate French.
Ben Petersen (Manchester, Conn.) tossed two-thirds of an inning in his fourth start. Tommy Merrick (Brockton, Mass.) hurled four innings and struck out five in his eighth relief outing of the spring. Morgan Weast (Cincinnati, Ohio), Ryan Spina (Lake Grove, N.Y.), and Hunter Authier (Westfield, Mass.) also made appearances out of the bullpen in the game.
