Baseball Powers Past Gordon, 10-2, Thursday
WENHAM, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team surged to a 10-2 win at Gordon Thursday afternoon in an inter-conference clash.
The Lions improve to 12-11 on the season with the victory while the Fighting Scots fall to 5-21 overall.
Steven Pesce (Harrison, N.Y.) posted a game-high three hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Zachary Carmody (Babylon, N.Y.) finished with a pair of base knocks, two RBIs, and two runs. Dylan Louviaux (Mohnton, Pa.) and Connor Simpson (Haverhill, Mass.) both registered two hits and one RBI.
The home team plated one run in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 1-0 edge. Daniel Quint crossed the dish on a squeeze bunt by Chris Leavitt.
The visitors responded with a pair of runs in the fourth to seize a 2-1 lead. Pesce led off the frame with his second home run of the spring. Carmody tagged up and scurried home from third base on a sacrifice fly off the bat of James Coury (Milford, Conn.).
Gordon leveled the contest at 2-2 with one run in the sixth as Joseph Mack scored.
Eastern Nazarene manufactured four runs in the seventh to claim a 6-2 advantage. Carmody raked a double to left-centerfield to drive in Anthony Esposito (Mount Royal, N.J.) and Pesce. Louviaux laced a single to centerfield to knock in Carmody before Bombard scampered home on a groundout by Matthew Urena (Flushing, N.Y.).
The Lions tacked on a run in the eighth to widen the margin to 7-2. Pesce roped a two-out single to right-centerfield to plate Josue Basilis (Bronx, N.Y.) from third.
The guests chalked up three runs in the top of the ninth inning to extend their lead to 10-2. Joshua Bombard (Rutland, Mass.) and Urena both scored as Anthony Castrogiovanni (Bohemia, N.Y.) singled to left field. Simpson poked a base knock to right-center to drive in Basilis from second base.
Ben Petersen (Manchester, Conn.) pitched six innings in his third start of the spring and struck out one batter. Tommy Merrick (Brockton, Mass.) worked three innings of relief to pick up his second save of the year.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene resumes conference play April 12 at home against Dean.
