NORTHBORO, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team picked up a pair of victories over Anna Maria Saturday afternoon at the New England Baseball Complex, earning a 3-2 win in the series-opener before capping off the day with a 4-2 decision.
The Lions improve to 7-4 on the spring while the AMCats slide to 7-6 overall.
Zachary Carmody (Babylon, N.Y.) and Connor Simpson (Haverhill, Mass.) fueled the offense with a pair of hits, three RBIs, and one run scored each on the day. Joshua Bombard (Rutland, Mass.) collected three base knocks and crossed the dish twice. Josue Basilis (Bronx, N.Y.) chipped in with three hits and one run scored.
In game one of the doubleheader, Eastern Nazarene rallied past Anna Maria 3-2.
The AMCats plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to establish a 2-0 lead. Jason Shell belted a home run to right-centerfield to drive in Adam Twitchell.
The Lions cut the deficit in half with one run in the top of the third. Basilis trotted home from third base as Carmody drew a bases-loaded walk.
Eastern Nazarene manufactured two runs in the fourth to jump ahead 3-2. Simpson roped a two-out double to the gap in left-center to score Matthew Urena (Flushing, N.Y.) and Bombard.
Brent Houle (Westfield, Mass.) notched eight strikeouts in a complete-game effort on the mound.
The Lions claimed a 4-2 victory over Anna Maria in the second tilt of the day.
Eastern Nazarene used two long balls to produce three runs in the top of the first inning and grab an early 3-0 advantage. Simpson led off the game with a solo homer, his first of the year and second career blast. Three batters later, Carmody went yard for a two-run shot to collect his second career home run and first of the spring.
The AMCats scored one run in the home half of the first to trim the margin to 3-1. Jake Crevier scampered home from third as Twitchell grounded out.
Anna Maria pulled to within one, 3-2, with a run in the third inning. Twitchell picked up his second RBI of the contest with a two-out single to center to plate Fili Veras.
Eastern Nazarene chalked up a run in the sixth to widen the gap to 4-2. Bombard tagged up and scored from third base as Urena skyed a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Brenndan Rogers (Hanson, Mass.) tossed his second complete game of the season to improve to 2-1 on the hill.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene is scheduled to travel to Curry March 21.
