Baseball Drops Two-Game Set at Salve Regina
NEWPORT, R.I.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team endured a pair of losses at Salve Regina Saturday afternoon, falling 6-3 and 11-4.
The Lions slide to 14-13 overall and 0-8 in Commonwealth Coast Conference competition with the results. The Seahawks improve to 13-11 on the year and 5-3 in league play.
Zach Zaino (Falmouth, Mass.) racked up two hits, two stolen bases, one RBI, and a pair of runs scored on the day. Zachary Carmody (Babylon, N.Y.) finished with two hits, two RBIs, one run, and one stolen base. Dylan Louviaux (Mohnton, Pa.) collected three RBIs, one hit, and one run. Devin Haberstumpf (Forest Hills, N.Y.) chipped in with two base knocks, one RBI, and one run scored.
In game one, Salve Regina benefitted from two long balls to claim a 6-3 win.
The Seahawks grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning as Alex Perry belted a three-run home run to left field.
Eastern Nazarene got on the board in the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-1. Zaino tagged up and scampered home from third base as Louviaux lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
The Lions evened the score at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Carmody laced a single up the middle to drive in Anthony Esposito (Mount Royal, N.J.) and Matthew Urena (Flushing, N.Y.).
Salve Regina regained a three-run advantage in the top of the sixth with three scores, 6-3. Colton Eremian launched a homer to left to plate Dylan Ketch and Zack Smith.
Brent Houle (Westfield, Mass.) threw 5.1 innings and recorded one strikeout. Xavier Faria (Assonet, Mass.) hurled 1.2 innings of relief and posted two strikeouts.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Seahawks used a late scoring outburst to secure an 11-4 victory.
Eastern Nazarene snagged a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the second inning. Haberstumpf raked a base hit to left field to drive in Louviaux from second base.
Salve Regina plated two runs in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. Eremian launched his second home run of the day, a two-run shot to score Smith.
The Seahawks chalked up a run in the fifth to extend their advantage to 3-1. Smith hoisted a sacrifice fly to left to knock in Michael DeFusco from third.
The Lions pulled even at 3-3 with two scores in the home half of the fifth frame. Louviaux scorched a single up the middle to plate Zaino and Carmody.
Salve Regina tallied three runs in the sixth to establish a 6-3 lead. Dustin Siqueira, John Militano, and Anthony Cieszko all crossed the dish.
Eastern Nazarene answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to trim the gap to 6-4. Zaino drew a bases-loaded walk to score Haberstumpf.
The Seahawks produced five runs in the seventh to stretch the margin to 11-4. Perry homered for the second time on the afternoon before Christian Vargas, Sam Brito, and Militano all picked up RBIs.
Brenndan Rogers (Hanson, Mass.) started on the mound and pitched four innings while fanning five batters. Ben Petersen (Manchester, Conn.), Briley Seiter (Bellevue, Ky.), Faria, and Haberstumpf all made relief appearances in the contest.
Up next, Eastern Nazarene hosts Lasell in an inter-conference matchup April 18.
