Baseball Clipped Twice by Roger Williams
QUINCY, Mass.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team dropped a two-game set to Roger Williams Monday afternoon at Adams Field, falling 3-0 and 3-2 in extras .
The Lions slide to 13-10 on the year and 0-6 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with the setbacks. The Hawks improve to 9-11 overall and 3-1 in league action with the results.
Zachary Carmody (Babylon, N.Y.) recorded two hits, one RBI, and one run scored on the day. Steven Pesce (Harrison, N.Y.) chipped in with a base knock and one RBI. Connor Simpson (Haverhill, Mass.) and Matthew Urena (Flushing, N.Y.) both finished with two hits in the doubleheader.
In the opening tilt, the visitors claimed their first shutout-victory of the season with a 3-0 decision.
Roger Williams got on the board in the top of the first inning, scoring twice to grab a quick 2-0 lead. Chris Bosco came around to score on a base knock to right off the bat of Shane Nowak. Justin Stone looped a single to shallow left field to drive in Nowak from second base.
The Hawks tacked on a run in the second to widen the gap to 3-0. Bosco sliced a single to right field to plate Tyler Rondeau from second.
Senior Brent Houle (Westfield, Mass.) tossed his first complete game of the season and fanned six batters in his sixth start of the season. With his six strikeouts, Houle became the 10th player in program history to amass 100 career strikeouts.
In a riveting second game, Roger Williams prevailed 3-2 in extra-innings.
The Hawks seized a 2-0 edge with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Tyler Rondeau flared a base hit to right to drive in Brandon Jenkins from second base before Tyler Cedena crossed the dish later in the frame.
The Lions responded with a run in the home half of the fourth to cut the deficit to 2-1. Pesce scorched a single up the middle to plate Carmody from second.
Eastern Nazarene leveled the contest at 2-2 with a score in the bottom of the fifth. Carmody drew a bases-loaded walk to collect his team-leading 16th RBI of the spring as Anthony Esposito (Mount Royal, N.J.) sauntered home.
Roger Williams tallied a run in the eight to reclaim the lead, 3-2. Dean DePreta scored from third base as Rondeau reached on a fielder's choice to notch his second RBI of the contest.
Junior Ben Petersen (Manchester, Conn.) pitched four innings in his fourth start of the year. Sophomore Brenndan Rogers (Hanson, Mass.) worked 3.1 innings in his third relief appearance of the season. Devin Haberstumpf (Forest Hills, N.Y.) hurled two-thirds of an inning of relief in his 10th outing of the year.
Looking ahead, Eastern Nazarene will step out of conference to host Dean April 10.
