Baseball Edges Elizabethtown 3-1 Friday
FORT PIERCE, Fla.- The Eastern Nazarene College baseball team scored twice in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie and held on to defeat Elizabethtown 3-1 Friday.
The Lions elevate to 7-1 on the season with the victory while the Bluejays flutter to 3-5 overall.
Zach Zaino (Falmouth, Mass.) and Devin Haberstumpf (Forest Hill, N.Y.) both collected a pair of hits and drove in one RBI in the contest. Joshua Bombard (Rutland, Mass.) and Matthew Urena (Flushing, N.Y.) each landed two base knocks. Zachary Carmody (Babylon, N.Y.) notched one hit and scored two runs while Steven Pesce (Harrison, N.Y.) added a base hit and one run.
Eastern Nazarene pushed across one run in the top of the fourth to nab a 1-0 edge. Zaino singled down the left field line to drive in Carmody from second base with two outs.
Elizabethtown knotted the game at 1-1 with a score in the bottom of the sixth inning. Derek Manning rounded third and scurried home on a single off the bat of James Katner.
The Lions manufactured two runs in the eighth to reclaim the lead, 3-1. Pesce motored home from first base as Carmody reached on an error. Haberstumpf followed with an RBI base knock to plate Carmody.
Brent Houle (Westfield, Mass.) threw 8.1 innings and registered four strikeouts in his second start of the year. Haberstumpf hurled the final two-thirds to pick up his third save of the season.
